Abyss Web Server X1 includes a feature that enables password protection of files/folders.

Here is a small example to understand how to use it.

Suppose you have a subdirectory named /photos in your documents path
(usually /htdocs). Let's say you want to restrict access to this subdirectory (/photos) to your firends jack and mary.

First, you will have to declare the two users:
* Open the console
* Select Server Configuration > Advanced > Users and Groups
* Press Add in the Users table
* Enter jack in the user name field and enter twice the password jack
will use to access restricted parts of your web site
* Then press OK
* Again, press Add in the Users table and declare the user mary the same way you did with jack.

Now press OK in the Users and Groups page and select Access Control. Press
Add in the Access Control table. Enter /photos in the virtual path field,
enter a small description of the restricted area in the Realm field, for
example "My Photos" (without " of course). Then check the checkboxes in front of the two users jack and mary in the Users table and verify that the order is allow/deny. Press OK and press Restart now.

That's it. Try to go to /photos using your browser (for example, using
http://127.0.0.1/photos ) and you be asked to enter your credentials. More
information about deny/allow meanings is available in the documentation
shipped with the web server.

This was helpful! Perhaps include this newbie-level explanation in the docs? :)

Do you get Error 401 without the browser displaying a dialog box to enter your login and password ?

So it is a browser issue. Either reinstall it or install another one ( Opera from http://www.opera.com is great)

It is a little bit hard to figure out what's working wrong with your installation without telling us too much about it. There are plenty of things that can corrupt Abyss Web Server dialog with your browser and make it misbehave. It is not a problem in Abyss Web Server since it works great on thousands of other computer and they use the same login screen at least one or two time a day. So please check the problem on your side or give us more information in order to able to help.

Since the problem is browser related, we cannot give another advice. But before reinstalling the whole browser (especially if it is IE), give opera a try. It is a small download and doesn't require too much time to setup/test.

Do you mean that we lived in months of illusion thinking that our software is OK while it won't let people access its console ? Saying that it doesn't work in your case doesn't make it a general rule. The general rule is that it works fine. If it isn't the case, please review your computer configuration, your network, your filters, your firewalls... Abyss Web Server cannot be held responsible for all the other software you run on your computer and which interact badly with it.
We are still here to help, but we can't help too much when you still say "It don't work, it won't work". More precisions and more collaboration from your side will be appreciated.

I use IE 6.0.2800.1106 and the console works great!
I have never had a problem with abyss
ever! I agree that you need to overlook your system and network settings
and then reinstall abyss.

I went into user and group management in the console
setup a single user and password for myself then set up a single group
I then went into the acces control and set up virtual path to the dir I wanted protected /c:\program files\abyss web server\aws\website\jj, and typed in my realm ' jerkys protected content ' and selected allow/deny allow for me and deny for the single-group then restarted the server.

The server is still not protecting the dir. ? got any clues?

As you discovered it, you should put there the virtual path (and not the real one.)

I think that all of the users that are complaining about the acces control not working is because they are mapping out the real path and not the virtual path to the directory that they want protected.

My advise is read the documentation,
read the documentation,
read the documentation and.....
if that doesn't do the trick you probly shouldn't be running a webserver,
go find a cheap company that can do it for you

Just a question ? What was the URL you associated with your 401 error ? [please give us the full URL]
If you put a put a full URL [http://myite/somepage] you don't get the password dialog (this is obvious from a technical point of view but not so obvious to users.) You should put there a relative URL (relative to your site : /somepage ) in order to have the password dialog displayed correctly and to have yor custom 401 page appear after several errors.

Do you get Error 401 without the browser displaying a dialog box to enter your login and password ?

This happened to me last night while I was playing around with the Abyss Console. I just dumped my cookies and RELOADED the page, while holding down the CTRL key. When the page reloaded with the old cookies cleared out, the password box came back up again. I then entered my password, and entered the directory - thus creating new cookies. :)

Wouldn't it be good to have some sort of system so that users of your webserver can password folders by themselves (.htaccess is an example)? The system you're using now is great, but the admin of the server has to do everything himself.

Other than that, this server is the undisputedly best one i've tried. Good work! :)

Yes, I've had the same thoughts. Perhaps in the protecton area of the console it could have us choose areas where other people who can upload files would have the ability to protect their own directories, while the rest is governed by the built in one in abyss.
I hate .htaccess by the way

Abyss is personam web server for now. It assumes that the person that hosts the web site has is also the adminitrator. That's why the .htaccess files concept wasn't used.
