what are they for, beyond accessing or not accessing folders in the server?
Can they be used for, per se, sessions for php, asp.net, etc.? _________________ My signature is so lame.

well if you make password protected directories you can make users, then allow them access to that directory with a username and password (IE users and groups) _________________ Where have i been? so, they would be able to sign in using internet explorer's login window thing, and then see a directory listing.
Ok, but i'm talking about more than just that.
Perhaps I'll attempt to rephrase.
Can the users/groups in the abyss console configuration be accessed and used as sessions by scripts on the server? _________________ My signature is so lame.

This could be done but in such a case, it's better to have your own user/groups system in yoru scripts. This is what scripts such as PhpBB do (they implement their own user/group policy/validation/storage/session system).
The user/groups feature available in Abyss Web Server is meant to quickly protect some files or directories. _________________ Support Team

Ahh.....Interesting...
I'll have to fiddle with that.
And I'll remember the difference in security too. _________________ My signature is so lame.
